Seth [00:00:00]:
Entrepreneur’s Enigma is a podcast for the ups and downs of entrepreneurship to the wins and the fails that we all face being entrepreneurs, how we learn from adversity. Every week I talk to a different entrepreneur with a story to tell. I’m Seth Goldstein. Come with me on the journey. This is Entrepreneurs Enigma. Let’s get started. Hey, everybody. Welcome to another edition of the Entrepreneur’s Enigma podcast.
Seth [00:00:34]:
I’m, as always, hasn’t changed in 200 plus episodes. Seth, today, I have Amanda Solar, who is the founder of Soulful Living, a collect a collective established to provide support, inspiration, tools, and techniques to help people live purpose purpose driven meaningful lives. She’s living her best life. I’ve known her from the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce up in Bucks County. She did that for 30 years.
Amanda [00:01:00]:
And I’m only 31, Seth, so I don’t even know how that works out.
Seth [00:01:04]:
She went there in diapers. Exactly. So but, you know, I and now she’s doing her own thing, and she’s also the director of mission delivery at the the LIV Project, which is a nonprofit organization that develops creative tools that encourage fearless conversations to turn the tide of youth suicide, which is very much needed. We can get into that a little bit because I know there’s been there’s a guy who released a book recently about, the anxious generation, Gen Gen Alpha, and I agree with him a little bit but not totally. We can get into that. An NYU professor, so he’s trying to sell his books, so he’s trying to be as controversial or as opinionated as possible, that kind of thing. And she was like I said, she was at the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce for 30 years, which is, I think, a little too long to be at one show. But but she rocked it.
Seth [00:01:51]:
But but, yeah, but you but you rocked it. I mean, you rocked it. I mean, you were the face of the chamber and, like, people you know? And you’re also very much an extrovert, and being part of a chamber and being extroverted kinda made sense, but but I’m glad you escaped. I’m glad you moved on to the next chapter and all that stuff.
Amanda [00:02:10]:
Yeah.
Seth [00:02:11]:
Me too. And so, you know, she is the woman about town in Doylestown. She has her own podcast, the Sofa Living podcast, which is a great one. I was on that as well, a while back, so I forgot that I was on it. And then I was like, oh, no. Again. Exactly. So, anyhow, Amanda, how’s it going? How are you doing today?
Amanda [00:02:30]:
I am doing great. I’m so honored, Seth, to be on your podcast. I’m so happy that I’m on your podcast, so thank you for inviting me.
Seth [00:02:38]:
I I’m surprised I haven’t got you on sooner. I’m like, wait. I haven’t had Amanda on yet. Oh my gosh. So awesome. So you’re doing a lot. I mean, you you ran the w two, then the magazine, the arts and arts magazine at the Chamber. Yeah.
Seth [00:02:52]:
You were the COO of the Chamber. You did a lot at the Chamber, and then you then you thankfully I think, thankfully, the job went away because I don’t think you would ever quit.
Amanda [00:03:03]:
You know what?
Seth [00:03:03]:
You’re one of the choices. I don’t think you would have left. And I think you’re
Amanda [00:03:06]:
I’m not great at extrication.
Seth [00:03:07]:
Now. Yeah. I think you’re I think you’re I think you’re better off that you’re not there anymore because you’re not gonna express I mean, I haven’t kind of intended if you look at soulfulconnections.com and the wings on the side of the old Sundin building in in Doylestown. But you’ve now spread your wings, and you’ve kind of you’ve kinda let the real man that comes out. You know? There’s no constraints. You can just do what you wanna do and be as loud as you humanly possible and just get the message out there. So Yeah. Yeah.
Seth [00:03:35]:
You know, it’s great.
Amanda [00:03:37]:
Seth, I love that because the truth is I did love the chamber because for many years, I got to do a lot of things. I got to help businesses grow. Mhmm. I was the editor of a magazine.
Seth [00:03:48]:
Yeah.
Amanda [00:03:49]:
So I’ve created events. It was really fun. But toward the end, it was like a beautiful suit that I would wear, and I love that suit. But it was, like, a little tight around the shoulders, a little great at the out. It was time to move. Yeah. And I knew it was time to move. I knew.
Amanda [00:04:07]:
Yeah. And I just couldn’t quite do it. I’m not great at that. I’ve been married to the same guy for my entire life. My best friends are from 1st grade. I’m not really up
Seth [00:04:17]:
to Yeah. Mover
Amanda [00:04:19]:
to. As you said. Yeah. Yes. So you’re right. I I I had already started soulfulliving.com during the pandemic and started my podcast. So I was just kind of doing it all.
Seth [00:04:29]:
Yeah. Which, you know and you have 3 kids
Amanda [00:04:32]:
Yes.
Seth [00:04:33]:
And a dog
Amanda [00:04:35]:
and a husband cats.
Seth [00:04:36]:
And 2 cats and a husband. You know? She’s like, not like you don’t have a lot to do in in general.
Amanda [00:04:42]:
Ultra. Ultra.
Seth [00:04:43]:
But you are, like, wanna add another thing, so you did. You added another thing. And so I’m very happy you did this. I’m I’m I’m thrilled that you found your your spot in the LIV project. I mean, that’s very much needed in this. I mean, it it’s crazy that that that the the kids’ suicides, the teen suicides, all that. Like, it’s like, come on. It gets better.
Amanda [00:05:03]:
Yeah. And you know what’s that?
Seth [00:05:03]:
When we look at it on our side
Amanda [00:05:05]:
Yeah.
Seth [00:05:05]:
When we’ve been lived through the turmoil and the cluster f of teenagehood, it does get better. But when you’re in it, oh my god. It’s it’s horrible.
Amanda [00:05:14]:
It’s hard. And teens, you know, young people, their frontal lobes don’t form till they’re in their twenties.
Seth [00:05:20]:
20 5. 25. Yeah.
Amanda [00:05:21]:
Yeah. So the truth is they don’t see the whole picture. It’s a really rough time. And with social media, I think it’s tougher than ever.
Seth [00:05:31]:
We’re gonna take a quick break, hear from our sponsors, and get right back to the show. Yeah.
Amanda [00:05:35]:
And we need to talk about it. We need to be able to converse about hard topics. And that’s why it kind of fits in, Seth, with what I do because everything that I’m doing is centered around authenticity Mhmm. Really finding, you know, meaning and purpose in your life.
Seth [00:05:55]:
I love it. I love it.
Amanda [00:05:57]:
You.
Seth [00:05:57]:
And so being the director of mission delivery, fancy name. What the heck does that mean?
Amanda [00:06:04]:
So, basically, let me tell you, the LIV project started when the the executive director, Honey Buff, her daughter, Liv, died by suicide at 18.
Seth [00:06:17]:
Oh.
Amanda [00:06:18]:
Yeah. So, you know, very tragic, beautiful, talented, intelligent girl. And when they were doing this celebration of life
Seth [00:06:29]:
Yeah.
Amanda [00:06:31]:
One of her friends who helped her is also a movie producer. She’s produced some of the Harry Potter films
Seth [00:06:38]:
Oh, wow.
Amanda [00:06:38]:
Some really big films.
Seth [00:06:40]:
Yeah. That’s good, babe.
Amanda [00:06:41]:
So Yeah. Yeah. She ultimately, through a series of discussions, produced a movie called My Sister Liv about Liv as told from the perspective of her sister, Ted. Oh, oh,
Seth [00:06:58]:
oh, you got heartaches.
Amanda [00:07:00]:
Beautiful, beautiful film Yeah. And powerful. And it really it kind of sets the stage for understanding how this can happen, why this happens, what to do through the lens of 1 girl’s story, one family’s journey. Yeah. And that created the nonprofit. They also cocreated a game with a company called Humanite. It’s like cards against humanity with a mental health twist. Oh.
Amanda [00:07:25]:
It’s called the game that goes there.
Seth [00:07:27]:
Oh, that’s clever. I I like that. Yeah.
Amanda [00:07:30]:
And there are a few rules. Be honest. Don’t be a jerk. Only have to go there if you want to. You know? Well, I
Seth [00:07:37]:
love that. Compared to compared to Cards Against Humanity where you’re supposed to be a jerk. It’s supposed to be disgusting.
Amanda [00:07:42]:
Right.
Seth [00:07:42]:
And Right. It’s the opposite side of that. I mean, guards against cards against humanity is a great game, but It’s
Amanda [00:07:49]:
not really a mental health. It’s not yeah. And this is different. So the problem is Did
Seth [00:07:53]:
it really just say that and that kind of thing? You could think, woah. That’s a little wrong.
Amanda [00:07:57]:
And this can be surprising, but not raunchy. And and the thing Yeah. The thing about so, basically, we take that film or the game and workshops hard but important conversations.
Seth [00:08:17]:
Mhmm.
Amanda [00:08:18]:
And really director of mission delivery, I’m kind of like a liaison between the organization and all those organizations. It’s it’s really rewarding.
Seth [00:08:29]:
Yeah.
Amanda [00:08:29]:
You know the surprising thing, Seth, is that it’s fun. I know it sounds like how can this be fun we’re talking about something so challenging.
Seth [00:08:37]:
Yeah. But you’re it’s rewarding more than anything else because you’re able to help people.
Amanda [00:08:41]:
And it’s a group of creatives. It’s their perspective. And you know me. I love, you know
Seth [00:08:46]:
You’re very creative. Yes.
Amanda [00:08:48]:
And I love that. So it’s it goes in line with soulful living and soulful connections because it’s about, let’s just get real. You know?
Seth [00:08:57]:
Let’s get real. Absolutely. Yeah.
Amanda [00:08:59]:
And that’s my favorite thing. And yeah. Back when I I was with the chamber, I was dealing with people who, I mean, like you, have these passions, these, beautiful businesses, and oftentimes, they would kind of delay their own gratification. They would say, like, well, when I am more successful, I’ll speak. Yeah. When I lose £10, I’ll go to a business credit change. But everything was about, you know, I’ll get to joy, but hang on. I’ve gotta be really diligent
Seth [00:09:32]:
first. Mhmm. And sometimes you just could jump in. Like, this is the thing with podcasting. I don’t even ask them how to do it. Well, just start. And it’s gonna suck. If it doesn’t suck at the beginning, you’re in abnormal abnormality.
Amanda [00:09:44]:
Gonna I agree with you.
Seth [00:09:46]:
And it gets better.
Amanda [00:09:47]:
You gotta do it 100 of time.
Seth [00:09:49]:
Hundreds. And I’m still I’m still screwing these things up.
Amanda [00:09:51]:
Well, you’ve been well, Seth, how
Seth [00:09:53]:
I’ve been podcasting since 2010.
Amanda [00:09:55]:
Yeah.
Seth [00:09:55]:
I mean, I’ve been podcasting for a very long time, but every I mean, this is a pen entrepreneur’s enigma. This is impossible. I mean, I would never I should never have named it entrepreneurs enigma. It’s hard to spell enigma. It’s hard to spell entrepreneur. Enigma, I always misspell. I even screwed the hat and put an extra r in it, so I had to take that out with a with a with a, with with with, you know, Leatherman popped out so they didn’t have to buy a new hat. So everyone could see that there’s a little
Amanda [00:10:21]:
Oh, that’s so cute.
Seth [00:10:22]:
Thing there because I was like, I’m not buying another hat because this hat was, like, a $50 hat to get this done. I’m like I’m like, not doing that again. But, I mean, look. I mean, let’s just rough in the beginning. Look. I actually had to pivot. I was this is me pontificating about entrepreneurship at the very beginning. And episode 11, I’m like, this is boring.
Seth [00:10:38]:
I wanna do this anymore. I wanna go back to my journalism roots, and I wanna do interviews again but with entrepreneurs and who have a story. And those would have side hustles, like, you know, because now, you know, Soulful Living is your side hustle to a a very important main hustle. And I think that’s great, and I and I love how I’ve branched into that saying, like, look, there’s entrepreneurs that are there’s I’ve even done some episodes with intrepreneurs or the inside the organization being entrepreneurs within their organization. So I can spend I can I’m I can spend with the best PR person out there. Right. I’m a very good spin.
Amanda [00:11:12]:
You you you are a good spinner, Seth. And you
Seth [00:11:15]:
I’m very good at spinning stuff. Yeah.
Amanda [00:11:16]:
One thing that we always say with the Chamber is that you should be entrepreneurial no matter what you’re doing. Yeah. You know, you really should be because it’s to me, it’s the way to find purpose in your day to day, honestly. You know? Absolutely. You don’t wanna kinda wake up, head out to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed. You know, there’s gotta be something really purposeful, I think.
Seth [00:11:40]:
Exactly. You have to enjoy life. Exactly.
Amanda [00:11:43]:
A 1000%.
Seth [00:11:44]:
Okay. So you’ve done the 3rd year career at the Chamber. So you’ve been in house for a very long time. And then you did the entrepreneurs thing for a little while while you got your feet, you know, on on steady on the ground, and then you found the LIV project where you’re like, this is what I wanted to do, and you found that and keeping still rocking and rolling. Well, what was the best thing about being an entrepreneur for that I mean, now it’s a side hustle. Which is still a Yeah.
Amanda [00:12:10]:
It’s still an entrepreneur. Even consider it a side hustle. I give it as many hours, if not more, than I do There you go. The Live Project because it is, really meaningful to me. I think because I worked all of those years helping other people with their business, I started to get kind of I don’t wanna say jealous because I didn’t feel Ancy. Ancy. Like, I I I wanted that. I wanted my one thing.
Amanda [00:12:38]:
I was like, I have something to say. But when it became soulful living, I thought, are people gonna get this? And it was just such a compulsion for me to say, no matter where you are, what you’re doing, we can develop a community, and develop some tools and develop some workshops that can help you, you know, level up your life, level up your business, level up your joy, level up your parenting, your relationships, all of that. Yeah. Because we’re holistic people. We’re not just one thing.
Seth [00:13:14]:
Absolutely. We’re very dynamic.
Amanda [00:13:15]:
And if
Seth [00:13:15]:
we’re not dynamic, we gotta get you to be dynamic.
Amanda [00:13:18]:
That’s right. So it became so what I really loved is kind of and what I still love I love even the challenge of figuring it out because you know, Seth, you’re so technical. Yeah. And I’m, you know, making my own website and going, like You’ve
Seth [00:13:33]:
done a good job too.
Amanda [00:13:34]:
Thank you so much. Thank god for YouTube is all I can say. Thank god for YouTube. Yeah. You know, it’s got it’s it’s got its issues.
Seth [00:13:40]:
Yeah. But it’s nice to build your own thing from that and and kinda build from the ground up, really be an entrepreneur, and really be, like, kinda go getter. And every once in a while, I get emails saying, Seth, what the heck did I just do?
Amanda [00:13:52]:
Right.
Seth [00:13:53]:
What did I just do? Help. And knowing when to ask for help too was kinda key. Knowing that you have friends that have got your back, like, I’ve always got your back, and that you’re able to say, Seth, what did I do?
Amanda [00:14:06]:
And I’m like, you missed a comma.
Seth [00:14:07]:
You missed the you missed the comma. And Yeah. And it’s amazing what you’re missing a comma in CSS can screw everything up quite easily.
Amanda [00:14:16]:
So And I’ve asked you information about podcasting. Oh, yeah? And, I mean, I think you’re so generous with your friends and your business.
Seth [00:14:23]:
I love it. I’m a much rather the whole thing, I’m not a big fan of Gary Gary Vaynerchuk. I think he’s kind of a loud mouth and a little verbose and a little full of himself. I’ve met the guy. He’s a nice guy in person, but still I think he comes across a little bit obnoxious. But I do like his book jab jab jab right hook, which is give, give, give, give, and then maybe ask.
Amanda [00:14:47]:
Oh, I love that.
Seth [00:14:48]:
And he lives by that mantra. I mean, he really does. He’ll give, give, give, give, give, give, give, and then maybe ask, hey. Will you sign for my newsletter? Or will you do this for me? Will you do that for me? But after he’s given way more than he’s asking for, and I love and I live by that. And to me, that’s key.
Amanda [00:15:04]:
Oh, I think that can about giving. You can transfer that to everything. I go back to the old school, like, Stephen Covey from back in the day Mhmm. Where he would talk about deposits and withdrawals. So I go deposit, deposit, deposit. Okay. Now I’m about to make a withdrawal. And I do that in my relationship.
Amanda [00:15:22]:
I do that as a parent. I do that as a business. You know how it is. You know? Yeah. So deposit I just made a big withdrawal, so I better start depositing.
Seth [00:15:31]:
Yeah. A re you know, you know, resaving. Exactly. So then so then so you left a 30 year career. I’m gonna harp on that 30 year career
Amanda [00:15:40]:
at Chamber.
Seth [00:15:40]:
I remember looking at your lead and saying, woah. She’s been there for a while, not knowing that.
Amanda [00:15:43]:
Oh, I know.
Seth [00:15:44]:
And then so what was the scariest thing about making the leap into entrepreneurship?
Amanda [00:15:48]:
Oh my gosh. It’s easy. The scariest thing and the only reason I stayed was financial. I mean, that’s the scariest thing. When you’re responsible for every nickel that comes in, that is a big thing. That is why I didn’t do it before because, really since, like, 2017, I was considering. And then the pandemic happened, and then I was like, okay. Well, I’m home.
Amanda [00:16:13]:
I have a minute. I’m gonna build something. And then after the pandemic, I wanted to do it, and I really couldn’t figure out how. And the financial thing is something that I’m still figuring out, but I’m getting better.
Seth [00:16:26]:
I’m 16 years into my business. I’m still figuring that damn thing out.
Amanda [00:16:30]:
Yeah. Everything else was pretty exciting for me, even creating my own network, you know, which is a little bit different. I had built a very strong network, but you know what? It’s still a different beast When I’m approaching somebody and I’m the chief operating officer of the chamber, there’s a different receptivity that when I say, hi. I’m Amanda with Soulful Living. There’s just a different
Seth [00:16:56]:
name. It’s still the name, but
Amanda [00:16:57]:
there’s you.
Seth [00:16:58]:
Different but different perception. You’re I’m a man of the chamber. Okay. This this woman knows biz Yeah. Business. Yeah. Whereas, you know, Amanda with Sofa Living, it’s more holistic, more Yeah. In the best way possible, more woo woo.
Amanda [00:17:11]:
It is. I mean It is.
Seth [00:17:13]:
And, like and it’s the softer side of Amanda because, I mean, it’s you know? Because you’ve always been you’ve always been a sweet pie, and you always been, like
Amanda [00:17:20]:
Thank you.
Seth [00:17:21]:
Soft and, like, sweet and helpful and all that stuff, but still it’s Amanda from the chamber.
Amanda [00:17:25]:
Right. I have that chamber with me.
Seth [00:17:27]:
You have the chamber with you. Like, it’s it’s it’s it’s kind of hard hard edges even Chain. Yeah. Regardless. You know? So here’s here’s the question of the ages. What is the most important thing we carry with you all the time? And you can go as woo woo as you want.
Amanda [00:17:42]:
The most important thing that I carry all the time is to radiate my own inner worth and reflect the people with whom I’m engaging inner worth. And to me, that connection
Seth [00:18:03]:
Love it.
Amanda [00:18:04]:
Is really something that I tried to carry with me at the chamber, and I still, carry it with me. It’s really important to me that Yeah. The person with whom I’m speaking understands their own value. Mhmm. And the the real power in their story. And that was something that I still actually worked on every minute when I was with the chamber, and that’s definitely a thread in my live project work, and it’s a thread in my own, podcast and website and community. Thank you.
Seth [00:18:41]:
Well, the best answer is possible. I love that.
Amanda [00:18:42]:
Thank you.
Seth [00:18:43]:
So, Amanda, where can people find you online?
Amanda [00:18:47]:
Well, they can find me a lot of different places. So they can go to www.soulfulliving.com. And Soulful, because my last name is Solar, It’s Yeah. Solfulibnj. I like that. Yeah. Soulfulliving.com. And they can I have a not only a website, but, of course, I have a LinkedIn Soho Living page? I’m Amanda Solo on LinkedIn.
Seth [00:19:14]:
With an e With a 9
Amanda [00:19:16]:
a? Yes. That’s a good point. It’s s o l e r. Yeah. It’s a Spanish name, soler.
Seth [00:19:21]:
Yeah.
Amanda [00:19:22]:
So, and I love it because solar has that double entendre with, like, the soul and the bigness. Sun. But the the sun and it’s light, and it’s kind of illuminating everything you want in your life. That’s kind of how I You’ve kinda
Seth [00:19:36]:
embraced it fully too, I think, because you’re very sunny.
Amanda [00:19:39]:
Oh my gosh. I love that. It’s
Seth [00:19:40]:
so so true.
Amanda [00:19:41]:
You’re so supportive. That’s the the wonderful thing about you.
Seth [00:19:44]:
You’re a very sunny person.
Amanda [00:19:46]:
Thank you.
Seth [00:19:47]:
So you know? And then also the LIV project, the l I v project, the LIV project dot org.
Amanda [00:19:53]:
Org.org.org.org. Yes. And if you go visit w w w.thelibproject.org, you can actually not only see, a trailer for the movie, you can see information about the game, but there’s also a host of resource resources. So if anyone out there is like, you know what? My kid is struggling. My nephew is having a hard time right now. I’m working with somebody who seems like they’re struggling. We do have resource guides on the website, and I welcome everybody to download them for free and to utilize them.
Seth [00:20:29]:
